August 6, 2016 – Walnut Creek – Joe Pool Lake

Got an early start at the lake and found more shad in the shallow water where I launch.  I guess they are returning, since the flooded waters are going down. I threw my cast net six times, and it opened to a good circle five times.   Got a few shad that were the size of small bluegills.

Jigged a small tree in the creek for about two minutes, then noticed the limbs were moving on the other side.  A large snake was in the tree with his head down near the water.  I got out of there.

I anchored up where I found some good structure on the fish finder. I caught a very nice bass with a senko.

I caught a few mud cats, two channels, and not much else.  I tried the cut shad and some dip baits.  I did manage to catch a small crappie while tossing a road runner around.

So, I decided to make one more cast before I left, and got a small bass sitting next to the shore.  This one was caught on a road runner.

July 30 2016 – Joe Pool Lake – Walnut Creek.

I woke up at 4:45 am planning to drive out to lake fork and get there by sunrise. Wind forecast had changed, so I made plans to go back to walnut creek.  Got there just before sunrise and was ready to go when the sun came up.  I caught two large four inch shad sitting next to the bank.  I caught another five before leaving.

I started the morning throwing my spinner bait around and jigged several stumps with a road runner.  Only got a small tap from a bluegill next to a tree. Decided to put on a piece of cut shad on a bobber and try to locate the catfish.  Tried four different spots until I got a bite.

I was going to take a picture of that first cat, when I noticed my camera had fallen to the floor of the yak.  It was under the seat where all the water drains out.  It was dead.  I caught just over twenty fish from that spot.  I had to put up my umbrella to keep the sun off of me.

The biggest cat was four pounds, all the rest were average.

I put a bag of ice on top of the fish in the cooler and let it sit for just over two hours.  This made the fillets come off much easier than normal.  My cuts were right next to the bones.

Joe Pool Lake – Loyd Park. (Catfish)

Hit the water at sunrise.  Couldn’t find any shad near the boat ramp, so I would have to use a dip bait for cats. My plan was to paddle down to walnut creek, since the wind was supposed to be high. Paddled to the opening that leads to the lake and realized the wind was already too high.  Waves were coming in high.

I dipped into a cove and decided to try to catch a few bluegills.  I threw a plastic worm around, followed by a road runner, but did not get any bites.

Dropped a slip bobber in near a tree and got a bite.  It was a nice catfish in about four feet of water.  I switched to my catfish gear and caught around ten cats.  Only two were of decent size.

Paddled back to Bowman creek and caught a few more catfish.  I was getting ready to leave, when I got an 8 pound cat to bite.  Had to use the net to get it in.  It took around 20 minutes to get it out of the net and on the stringer.
