April 4, 2015 – Walnut Creek – Joe Pool Lake

Picked up a hummingbird 598ci SI fish finder.  The water was still dirty in the creek, but I just wanted to test the side imaging.  I was able to see all the structure out to the sides of the boat, but no fish.  I spent most of the time playing around with the controls, and trying different settings.

I had to go deep into the creek before I started seeing any bait fish at all.  I saw a few dots on the SI and thought I’d try to catch one.  A small bass hit my road runner around 10 feet away from the bank.

That was the only fish of the day.  Next time I’ll go further in the creek to see if anything is there.

March 28, 2015 – Walnut Creek – Joe Pool Lake

Windy, dirty water, but warm.  Water temps were 65-70 degrees.  Water level is 3ft higher than it was this time last year.  The recent rains and wind have kept the water a muddy brown color.  This usually means the fishing will not be good.  I was correct.

Threw the spinner bait around and found nothing.  Jigged my normal areas with no luck.  The only fish of the day was caught jigging up close to the bank near a stump.  It was a small fish, but anything is better than nothing.

It was a good day to paddle, not to hot at all.  Saw several kayaks in the creek and a few fishing.  No one appeared to be catching anything.  I met one bank fisherman who caught four white bass with minnows.

It may be a few more weeks before the fish get in the creek.

First fish of 2015.

April 26, 2014 – Lancaster and Huffines Park.

20+mph winds outside, so I couldn’t take my yak out to the lake.  I wanted to do a little fishing, so I headed out to Lancaster park.  The bluegills are in the shallows, and they were hitting the little white popper I was throwing with my fly rod.

This bass was hiding in the grass behind the gills.

A large bass took the white popper down and snapped the line.  I had to switch over to a yellow popper after that.  Caught just over thirty bluegills and a small bass.

Headed out to Huffines Park in Richardson next.  The wind was to high for the middle and east ponds, so I just stayed at the west pond near the gym.  The wind was behind me, so I used the roll cast to reach the fish that were on the opposite (north) bank.

The pond is full of green sunfish that will hit the popper as soon as it hits the water.  I stopped counting after 30.

This fat greenie put up a good fight, but I got him in.
