March 3, 2012 – Joe Pool Lake – Bowman Creek.

The water at Joe Pool is still muddy in the lake and in the creeks.  Water temp was 55 degrees.  Walnut creek has been so unproductive, I decided to to go to Bowman Creek near the boat ramp.  Fishing was very slow, but I expected that due to the muddy water.

I caught two bass on a spinner bait near some rocks that have been covered by water.   I paddled down to the bridge and did get any bites.  Saw a guy fishing from the bank with minnows, but he wasn’t catching anything either.

I jigged a road runner in a few bushes on the way back and got a small crappie to bite.  The fishing should improve when the temps get a little higher.

On a side note, I had to get rid of my truck due to continuing problems with it.  I replaced it with a chevy equinox which gets better gas mileage than the truck did.  The hitch installer had problems with the wire connections, so the left blinker on my trailer was not working. I had to take it back to the dealer twice to get it installed correctly.

2012 Goals

Someone asked on one of the boards what my fishing goals are for 2012, so here they are.

#1 Catch Crappie in Open Water
#2 Catch anything on a clouser/streamer fly
#3 Learn to throw a tight circle with the cast net
#4 Catch Catfish

The two times I went to open water I caught one crappie each time.  I want to be able to go out to the trees and learn to locate the crappie.

I’ve only caught one bluegill on a small clouser.  I can now tie the clouser in various colors, so its time to catch something with them.  I’ll try for bass in the creeks in the spring.

My cast net skills are severly lacking.  I throw out an oval almost every time.  I’ll work on it so I can use the cut shad as bait for catfish.

I’ve been catching catfish accidentally on my fly rod, so now I will start trying to catch them on purpose with cut shad.
